Meibion Glyndr

Postiogan Cwlcymro » Llun 12 Mai 2008 9:44 am

Erthygl yn y Wales on Sunday ddoe (Dwi'n gwbo fod na ŵ yn Glyndŵr, ond yn amlwg dydi'r WoS ddim!). Erthygl gachu os fydd un erioed, ond diddoro cylwed am y slogan "Troi Nol Saes" wedi ei sgwennu ar wal mynwant ym Mhenfro. Troi Nol Saes yn swnio fel fersiwn chydig bach fwy cywir o Cai Maes Sais tydi!

Could we see return of cottage-burning group?
May 11 2008 by Tim Lewis, Wales On Sunday

THEY caused havoc across Wales for more than a decade, but only one man was ever convicted of their crimes.

In a campaign of arson lasting for more than 10 years Meibion Glyndr – the “Sons of Glyndr” – targeted the second homes in rural Wales belonging to people living in England.

The last attack was in the mid-1990s but many Welsh speakers continue to have difficulty finding homes in their own communities and the question is being raised – are we seeing a resurgence of Meibion Glyndr?

In April the Pembrokeshire stables of a Cardiff-born husband and wife were vandalised apparently in a case of mistaken identity by people who thought the couple were English.

The sick criminals even targeted one of the horses – slashing its nose.

Elsewhere, police in Mid Wales were called in to investigate more anti-English vandalism, this time on a housing estate in Newtown.

Graffiti slogans exclaiming “Meibion Glyndr”, “Wales 4 the Welsh” and “Welsh homes 4 Welsh people!”, started to appear on the Vaynor housing estate in a campaign stretching over a number of months. And quick look through social networking site MySpace reveals a Meibion Glyndr page with friends including the “Free Wales Army” and “Welsh Nationalists”. It has been viewed by more than 1,500 people.

Last week, again in Pembrokeshire, but this time in Narberth, Meibion Glyndr symbols were sprayed in huge writing onto the walls of the graveyard.

They were accompanied by a big slogan declaring “Troi Nol Saes” meaning “Turn Back English” in white letters.

A nearby car had also had its bonnet ruined with the same logo bearing the initials M and G.

Dyfed Powys Police said investigations were “ongoing” into the attacks but no suspects had been arrested.

Aran Jones, chief executive of the Welsh communities campaign group Cymuned, said it was very strange to get reports of three such incidents attributed to Meibion Glyndr in a short space of time. But he dismissed at least one of the incidents.

He declared: “I am 100% sure the one involving the horse stables was not done by a Welsh-speaker.

“It’s clearly someone who’s typed something along the lines of “get out Englishmen” into a poor English-to-Welsh translator and it’s come up with that nonsense.

“People think if they do something like that people will blame it on Welsh nationalists. It could be someone trying to start some sort of campaign to turn people against the language.

“Broadly speaking, the levels of anti-English feeling in Wales are at the lowest level they’ve been at for a while.”

He said that during the height of the activities of Meibion Glyndr in the ’80s and ’90s, many people in Wales did not condemn their actions because they agreed with the basic principles and because nobody was getting hurt.

Owain Williams, leader of Lais Gwynedd – the party that booted Plaid Cymru from overall control in the strong Welsh nationalist heartland – said there is a problem with affordable housing in Gwynedd, as in many other parts of Wales.

He admitted: “There’s definitely a problem with affordable housing for locals and that’s one of the first things we are going to look at.

“We need to be encouraging people to set up their home here but to do that we need to get first-time buyers onto the market.

“People in Gwynedd are using politics not actions do to their talking and I’ve not heard anything about Meibion Glyndr or any other nationalist organisation becoming more active.”

In 2004, Elfyn Llwyd – MP for Meirionnydd Nant Conwy – said he thought some of the original attacks could have been orchestrated by agent provocateurs of the secret service. His comments sparked a row about exactly who was to blame about the attacks, of which nearly all remain unsolved.

But Mr Llwyd is another who is not convinced that Meibion Glyndr could be making a comeback.

“There’s nothing to indicate that anyone is becoming active under Meibion Glyndr and I hope they never will again,” he said.

“I can understand there being tension in rural parts of Wales because it is becoming increasingly difficult for people to get homes. Hopefully, it is just individuals using the name of Meibion Glyndr to try and draw attention to themselves.”

Dafydd Morgan Lewis, spokesperson for the Welsh Language Society, added: “It’s no secret that there is a lack of affordable housing in Wales, and getting local people into the houses is something we would support.

“But I have never had any dealings with Meibion Glyndr and I have never met anyone who claimed to be from the organisation.”

As for estate agents, they too are not concerned that second homes could be targeted by an arson campaign again.

“The market for second homes in the area is definitely a growing one but we’ve not heard of any local people being unhappy with it,” said a spokesperson for FMB Estate Agents, who have offices all across Pembrokeshire. “If anything it helps to bring some money into the local economy.

“Most of the English people that buy homes in the area are looking to relocate from major cities.

“It’s still only a very small percentage of people who buy second homes but do not live in them all year around.
Wales? Whales? Do you mean 'da fish, or them singing bastards?

Mae na lot o bobl sy'n paentio sloganau pseudo-wleidyddol ar bethau - mwyafrif sylweddol swn i'n credu - nad ydyn yn perthyn i'r mudiad (MG, NF, BNP, CND, beth bynnag). Ac am losgi, wel...

Yma yn Nheyrnas Ffeiff mae gormod o dai gwag sy wedi cael eu llosgi yn ystod y 5 mlynedd diwethaf. Does gennym ni ddim "Meibion Glyndwr", doedd y tai ddim ym meddiant estroniaid (pobl o ochr ddeheuol y Forth neu ochr ogleddol y Tay) - mae'n ffaith fod ty gwag yn cynnig cyfle i fandaliaid - ac weithiau mae hynny yn gorffen efo llosgi.

Hefyd, petaswn i'n aelod o'r Free Fife Fighters (dim yn bodoli, hyd am wn i) neu rywbeth tebyg, efallai mod i'n ceisio datblygu rhyw esgus ffug-wleidyddol tu ol i bob llosgi ac yn honni mai nyni (FFF) a'i wnaeth - mae'n gyhoeddusrwydd!

Ie, wrth edrych ar yr erthygl, mae'n amlwg nad oes dim ymchwil tu ol iddi ac mae'r Golygydd yn defnyddio rhyw esgus er mwyn sathru band bach o eithafwyr na wyddont ddim byd am y llosgi a'r trais.
A bheil thu gam aithneachadh?

non-stori yw'r erthygl. diw e ddim yn dweud llawer. ceisio stocio teimladau gwrth-gymraeg effallai yw e- os ie- wedyn nid golygydd dda iawn lol

ond serch hyn mae'n rhoi ychydig o hysbyseb i mater bwysig iawn yng Nghymru. mae pobl yn symud i fewn i Gymru ac yn prisio allan y frodorion.

mae'r ffaith bod 99% o'r estronwyr yn saes yn amherthnasol.

OND mae'r ffaith bod y mewnfudwyr yma ddim yn trafferthu i ddysgu Gymraeg pan maent fel arfer yn byw mewn ardal sy'n siarad cymraeg.

mae arsylwyr wedi pwyntio allan bod na pentrefi ayyb yng Nghymru sy'n llawn estronwyr yn byw, mannau lle roedd Cymraeg oedd y iaith jyst ychydig a flynyddoedd yn ôl.

serch hyn dyw'r elit gwleidyddol ddim eisio gwybod.
