'SIR – I was saddened to read the article by Owen Hughes “This will ruin 5-Star Dream” regarding a campaign on Anglesey opposing Cais opening a 16-room rehab centre at Capel Coch, Llangefni 500 yards from Treysgawen Hotel.

The fears stated in the article are not based on fact.

People should be aware that anyone going into a rehab centre are ill and have voluntarily gone for treatment recognising their problem and taking responsibility for it.

They are absolutely no threat to the local community, rather Treysgawen could actually benefit from increased bookings as families and friends of the recovering addict often need somewhere to stay as they also should receive counselling as to how to help their relatives.

In fact, the threat to local communities comes from people who have not taken the step to help themselves, thieving and stealing to support their illness, becoming homeless, lonely and desolate.

Stepping Stones Addiction clinic in Kommetjie, South Africa, is in the centre of a very small village and the villagers do not feel threatened at all – rather they benefit from the increased economic spending that takes place in their little cafe, their post office and the beauty salon and have a respect and affection for the patients. The Priory is in the middle of an expensive residential area in Hale and the problems the locals there have are from aggressive organised criminals with guns, not the people being treated.

What we should be crying out for in North Wales is proper support for these people in the form of a professional dual diagnosis treatment clinic for all suffering from bulimia, anorexia, drug and alcohol addictions as well as self-harm, on the lines of Stepping Stones. Unless you are lucky and have the money to go to the Priory at some £24,000 a month you have a slim chance of a cure after simple detox without the psychological back-up and ongoing specialist support after leaving the centre.

A detox centre is simply inadequate to deal with long- term solutions. It is a stopgap. We would welcome really progressive action on the part of organisations such as Cais as well as proper education for the public as to the true work done in such places.

We call for the Welsh Assembly Government and Local Health Boards to take a realistic view of this growing problem and tackle it positively. And please, PLEASE open your eyes, people in treatment are not going to have any negative effects on you or your business.
