I AM writing in response to Wednesday’s Daily Post article ‘Banned from the USA’, which reported Arfon Gwilym’s unsuccessful application for a visa to visit the US.
While I can imagine that his unnecessary rejection must have come as quite a shock considering the minor nature of his offence, as well as the time elapsed since it occurred, his contention that his actions as part of Cymdeithas yr Iaith were at all comparable to the civil rights movement in the US is nothing short of disgusting.
How does this man have the audacity to compare the segregation, discrimination and intimidation faced by millions of African-Americans, as well as the struggle of the civil rights movement to achieve equal treatment for all American citizens, to his own efforts to secure bilingual road signs and Welsh language television for the few hundred-thousand Welsh speakers in this country?
While I understand that the issues surrounding second homes cause a great deal of distress, particularly for those seeking to take their first steps on the property ladder during such economically tumultuous times, it can hardly be compared to the issue of racial discrimination experienced worldwide.
If he has indeed written such a sentiment to the American President, as was claimed in the article, I hope that Obama will see the humorous side of such an erroneous comparison, rather than be deeply insulted by notion.
