Government to Consider Banning Non-English Speaking Immigrants
An official British Government agency chose to mark UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day and its theme of ‘harmonious environment for all languages’ by questioning whether non-English speaking immigrants should be admitted to the country.
According the BBC the recently established Commission on Integration and Cohesion “wants ministers to consider changing immigration rules to ensure new arrivals have some command of the language before being allowed to come as a worker or through marriage”.
(Nid yw'r datganidau'n gwneud yn glir os mae'r mesuriadau yn son am holl fewnudwyr neu dim ond rhai o du allan y EU. Mae rhagfarn ieithyddol yn erbyn gyfraith Ewrob.. hefyd does dim modd cau ffiniau rhag ddinasyddion gwledydd EC eraill).
Mae'r BBC hefyd yn dweud “The government also proposes to cut benefits to those who cannot prove they are learning English”.
In an interim report the Commission sited not “speaking English as the single barrier to successful integration” Commission chairman Darra Singh said: “If you can't speak English - whether you are a new migrant or someone who has lived here for years - you are on a path to isolation and separation."
The report goes on to question weather translation services help or hinder integration
The Commission's was established in August 2006 and its final report will be published in June 2007
