Tesco is committed to the communities we operate in, and we recognise the importance of promoting the Welsh language within our stores in Wales. We have been working hard to promote the Welsh language and we are constantly looking at ways to develop these services. We appreciate you taking the time to raise some ideas with us.
You will be aware that we are increasing the amount of permanent dual-language signage in our stores across the country. The practicalities of having 70 stores in a variety of formats and ages across Wales means that not all stores have the same level of dual-language signage, but we are pleased with the progress we have made so far which we will continue to work on. Bilingual own-brand packaging is also an area we are working on and you will see that, among other things, our new localchoice milk, pre-packed Welsh tomatoes and Tesco Welsh free range eggs are bilingually packaged.
With regard to making announcements in Welsh, we aim to do this wherever possible. Welsh speaking staff are, of course, encouraged to speak to Welsh speaking customers in Welsh and you may be aware of the policy that shows staff members who can speak Welsh have the Welsh Language Board symbol displayed on their name badges. We also recently led a campaign called Checkout Cymraeg, in conjunction with the Welsh for Adults Centre, that worked to encourage our customers to use Welsh in our stores and also to encourage adults to learn Welsh.
In terms of selling Welsh products, Tesco aim to stock as many Welsh lines as possible. This is an area we have been working on for some time and we currently stock about 400 Welsh products in our Welsh stores, and have recently opened a local buying office to enable us to increase the number of Welsh that we offer.
Tesco is committed to the Welsh language and the culture of Wales, and is very proud to be serving its customers in Wales.
