Scots Language book tops charts

A book written entirely in Scots has reached the top spot in the Scottish bestseller chart maintained by the Waterstone's chain of bookshops.

Itchy Coo's translation of the children's classic The Twits by Roald Dahl has in its Scots incarnation, The Eejits, sold many thousands of copies since its launch in September. Translated by Scots writer Matthew Fitt, it has become one of the fastest selling books in Scotland.

In the English version of The Twits, Roald Dahl's story about the world's most revolting couple, Mr Twit was horrible and hairy and his wife Mrs Twit just plain ugly. Now in The Eejits they are honkin, mawkit, bowfin and clarty and Mrs Eejit's hackitness is revealed in all its manky glory. In Matthew Fitt's translation of this classic book you can find out exactly what "sleekit terrible things the Eejits do to each other and what makes them both so completely mingin."

”Mr Eejit wis an eejit. He wis boarn an eejit. And noo at the graund auld age o sixty, he wis a bigger eejit than ever”.

The publishers of the book have contrasted the high level of public interest in the Scots book shown by book sales with the lack of official recognition afforded to the Scots language. (Eurolang 2006)
