The British and Irish Governments have announced that the UK will introduce a language act for Irish in Northern Ireland following the Agreement made at St Andrews, Scotland in mid-October to restore devolved government. MEPs and NGOs who have been campaigning for a new Act have welcomed the move.
Speaking to Eurolang MEP Bairbre de Brun (Sinn Féin) said that : "The British government commitment to introduce an Irish Language Act is very welcome. It is also significant that this is to draw on the experience in Wales and in Ireland.

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) expressed concerns about the Irish Language Act being used as a vehicle to "erode Britishness". The DUP added that they will take all necessary steps to ensure that money is not "wasted" on Irish language schemes.
