Dear Mr Williams,
Thank you for your recent e-mail to our chief executive Iain Coucher with regards to the welcome posters at Manchester Piccadilly station.
I understand that you remain dissatisfied with our previous response which advised that the languages represented were not an exhaustive list for passengers using the station. As I am sure you will appreciate, we are unable to cater for every nationality that could use the station and be unfamiliar with English. The poster that you refer to at Manchester is the same that can be found at all of our managed stations across the country to offer an efficient, economic and consistent message to all passengers passing through.
The Welsh phrase for welcome was not included on our signage as it is understood that the vast majority of Welsh passengers would be familiar with the English language. We regard these posters as a tool to aid passengers not familiar with English. As such, we took the decision not to include Welsh (among with many other languages that are more likely to understand English).
Whilst we appreciate your comments on the significance of the Welsh language, our posters were designed to assist nationalities that potentially would have the greatest difficulty understanding the language. These posters in no way reflect any preference to different nationalities, and we would strongly disagree with your comments about our company not welcoming the Welsh into our stations. Our investment in the railway infrastructure throughout Wales over the past 8 years underlines our continuing commitment to Wales and the communities it serves.
With this in mind, we do not intend to update these posters to include Croeso. I understand that this will not be the response you had hoped for, but trust that this clarifies our position.
Kind regards,
Brian Wortman
